Winter Camping: Keeping Warm In Cold Weather

BlackWaterBushcraft demonstrates how to stay warm in the depths of winter.

Blood flow is extremely important in staying warm. When you are feeling cold it is important to get your heart pumping and your blood flowing. That being said, you do not want to sweat in the winter. Your clothing will absorb the moisture which will in turn make you even colder. Never buy or wear any winter clothing that is restrictive in any way. Keep your boot laces a bit looser than normal and don’t wear too many layers of socks. Too many layers of socks will restrict blood flow, it is much better to wear one decent weight wool pair. You loose body heat the quickest through your wrists, neck and head so bundle up. Wool clothing is king in the winter, it keeps you warm even when wet. When staying warm is a constant battle, every decision you make is crucial to your survival. But when you challenge winter and thrive, it quickly becomes peaceful and cozy. 2018 ULTRALIGHT 7lb thru-hiking Gearlist, With Full Cook Kit

Heres my ~7lb ultralight gear list. I am not a thru hiker, I used "thru-hiking"in the title to increase the range of my audience. However, I think this list would work very well on a thru hike with a few minor modifications.

I kept costs and weight of this list low by making, modifying, and buying second hand a lot of the items shown here. Im sure I left a few small critical items out (like ID, cash, Paper maps) and forgot to discuss some items in detail but this is the meat and potatoes of this years list for me.

Like I said in the video, for bug protection i will use my DIY hexamid tent once I finish making it.

I can get this list even lighter by getting or making a nicer quilt and using my lighter quilt for the summer months. Can drop even more weight by dropping the cook kit (which i do occasionally when its warmer out) and leaving behind items like the battery pack on shorter trips.

The hammock itself seems to do the job well. It hangs well and is sturdy. The bag that everything is housed in is small and light, excellent for carrying along or placed in a larger ruck. However, I paid for a new product, yet both carabiners that came with the hammock were scratched and one of them looked bent--this was straight out of the plastic bag and nylon bag that it comes in. My bug out (camping/survival) bag

My bug out bag is the 5.11 All Hazards Prime.

I am preparing for the bug out bag mainly for disaster strike at camping. The camp sites in Taiwan isn't as safe as it looks. Most of the camp sites are not "legal", in which the roads that reaches to the site aren't safe and can be damaged easily during the extreme weather condition.

The nearest town can be 20~30 minutes away by car, which if roads are blocked.

When disaster strikes, electricity, food, etc. can be cut off.

A hiking trip to Bukit Kutu, KKB, Malaysia. We woke up pretty early to drive to the trailhead. All good!

Location: Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, Malaysia.

Start point: 3.572510N, 101.738128E 289m a.s.l.

Summit: 3.543263N, 101.719998E 1092m a.s.l.

Difficulty: Moderate. No technical skills required, just a fair amount of stamina. The trail is not very steep, but it goes on for a fair amount of distance. Trail is easy to follow but has a fair number of obstacles (branches, fallen trees, etc.)

Duration: 3 hours 57 minutes (including break at summit & ruins)

Length: 6.5km

Average Speed: 1.6km/h

Max elevation: 1092m

Min elevation: 285m

Vertical Up: 992m

Vertical Down: 216m

Minimum 2L fluid (3L+ recommended), isotonic recommended.

Great, high quality hammock!

This is probably the best hammock you can get for the price. It's made of sturdy material that will last. Re-enforced stitching ensures the hammock will stay together. The material is light-weight, making carrying easier. Packing the hammock in the self-contained bag is simple and has ample room to fit the hammock.

The best part is, although the description indicates it comes with two ropes, mine came with two heavy-duty, 8-foot reflective straps. These straps are great and will make hanging the hammock a breeze.

While looking for some camping gear on Craigslist, I found this absolutely mint condition 1992 Kelty Super Tioga External Frame Backpack On Craigslist for $50. After watching another Youtuber making modifications to his external frame backpack I thought it might be cool to do the same thing. I did a quick search on Craigslist and found the Kelty for $50. I thought it was a steal. It looked brand new. I tried it on and the pack itself is super comfortable and there is so much room to pack my gear. I haven't taken it in the woods yet but I hope to very soon.

Another adventure from Bali. I went with some friends of mine, both local and international, to drive our scooters to Mt Batur. Mt Batur is the the 2nd highest mountain in Bali and is a very popular half day trek for tourists. We didn't trek it, though. We camped overnight next to it. We brought camping supplies with us and drove to a local farmer's place and set up our camp. Mt Batur is a smaller active volcano that sits inside a much larger inactive volcano. We were camping inside the larger one with a perfect view of Batur.

Getting to know the locals in the country you are visiting opens up opportunities like this that no tourist could ever know about.

Camping Gear ~ Walmart Ozark Trail 8 x 21 Compact Binoculars

Once again I was in Wlamart looking at camping gear and I couldn't believe how good these Ozark Trail 8 x 21 Binoculars were and for under $10 makes these a no brainer. Grab these and throw them in your gear kits. I was in a Walmart other than my own local Walmart and I spotted these Ozark Trail Binoculars in the sporting goods section.

Here is the Amazon link for the Ozark Trail 8 x 21 Compact Binoculars, saw the price was less than $10 so i decided I would at least open the box and take a look at them. The first thing I noticed was the binoculars had a little bit of weight to them and i thought that was a good thing. I put them up to my eye and looked all the way across Walmart and I could believe just how well the binoculars were doing. Being 8 x 21 binoculars means the image you see is magnified 8 times as much. I just wanted small lightweight binoculars that I could take hiking, fishing & camping. Under $10 is an awesome price for these and well worth the money. I think they would make great bird watching binoculars as well. The view is very crisp & clear and the color is very sharp. I literally had to look at the price twice as i was in the store using them. I'm going to put these compact binoculars in my kayak and use them while fishing to spy on other fisherman and what they are catching. How many times do you look over and see that your fishing buddy is fighting a fish but you can't see what it is. With these little fishing binoculars, I'll be able to see and then I'll head over and steal his fishing spot.

Camping Gear ~ The Importance Of A Cold Weather Clothing Bug Out Bag

Every year when the weather turns cold I gather my cold weather bug out camping gear bag and I carry it in any vehicle I'm traveling in. This cold weather bug out bag has saved me so many times I can't count them. You should consider doing the same. I use it when camping a lot and also when kayak fishing. I would never trust a weather app on your phone or your local weather man. If you plan based on them, you could find yourself in a real jam. I say be prepared for whatever type of situation that cold weather may throw at you.

Since I've started carrying a cold weather bag I've let other people borrow my clothing because it seems like they never come prepared for the cold weather or conditions. This has happened a lot with my family. They are always grateful I have gloves, beenies or windbreakers that they can use. I try to carry some winter survival clothing that will be good for any bad weather situation. Rain gear, gloves, clothes for layering, warm socks, underwear, I even bring a bunch of HotHands hand warmers. Whatever vehicle I'm traveling in, I just throw my bug out bag in and go knowing that I have something to wear no matter what weather situation I run into. I carry all of my cold weather clothes in an oversized marine bag from Bass Pro. The bag itself is pretty much waterproof and makes a great bug out bag to carry all your cold weather clothing. No matter what you put in your winter bug out bag as far as clothing goes, I can almost guarantee that at some point you will use it. Do you carry an emergency bag for your car?

2018 Gossamer Gear: The One Tent Review Part 1 (Winter camping in snowstorm))

Watch, as I go solo camping during a winter snowstorm in the Gossamer Gear "The One" tent. This is the newest 2018 version of the tent. I wanted to test this tent's ability to hold up in the winter weather that I sometimes encounter while backpacking.
